After our camping trip the activity week continued at a hectic pace. On Wednesday the class went on a 1916 Walking Tour of Dublin with the inimitable Lorcan whose passion for the subject was rivalled only by his indepth knowledge. He really brought this chapter of history to life.
Following the tour we visited Irish Aid for a workshop. This was an eye-opener for us all. The class were divided into families and had to make decisions on education, food security and transport and see how their decisions impacted on their lives.
On Thursday we had a wonderful workshop from Mr Broderick. The class made butter the old-fashioned way and learned about match-making and many of the old customs and stories from our not too distant past.
This 6th group photo will require a bit of Photoshop work to get it ready in time for the graduation booklet.
Parents' Council are seeking donations of any unused school books and or uniforms.
To start the activity week the TYs visited the Shannon River Adventure Centre in Roscommon. The various activities included archery, climbing wall, mudslide, obstacle course, kayaking, pier jumping and camping (not glamping!).
Students from 1A5 displaying their fabulous Medieval history projects in the library this morning.
These first year students are currently studying The Renaissance in history class. Here they are emulating Michaelangelo who spent 4 years on his back painting the ceiling of The Sistine Chapel in The Vatican!
All those fortunate to be present for the talent show experienced an amazing array of talent from our students. Fifteen acts presented on the night and the entire show was compered most capably by the multi talented (not to mention eye candy) duo of Jack O'Donohoe and Ciaran Griffin. A special word of praise must be reserved for a wonderful audience who cheered on each act and made all the performers fell so at ease.
The judges spoke of the difficulty they had in separating the acts but in the end 1st place was awarded to Tadhg Carey and Tamsyn Kenny, 2nd place went to Laoise Power and Cliona Tebbe, while third place was deemed to be a tie between Jake Ward and Daniel Jupe.
Finally a word of thanks to Ms. Sullivan and Ms. Caffrey for organising the event and to the large number of staff who help on the night and supported the event.

Our 3rd year group shared a memorable day in Tayto Park on Thursday. By all accounts, youth and enthusiasm was the order of the day as they made every effort to persuade their teachers to ride the roller coaster and climbing wall. A big thanks to Mr.Broderick and Mr.Cotter for organising the day.
Well done to all 37 students who completed a tough 20 km hike in Glendalough on Friday 28th April, and most were still smiling at the end! A special word of thanks to Mr.Kennedy, Ms.Deasy and Ms.Delaney for leading the way.

Missing from the photo are Ellen Coburn and Lara Coady. Well done to them all for the work with the first years, your efforts are appreciated by the entire school community.
We became aware of a really touching gesture today when we were contacted by the Bord Gais Student Theatre Awards Scheme. We were informed that Bob Cullen had been nominated by a member of the public saying "Thank you" to a special teacher that had made a lasting impression on that person's life.
Bob was a most remarkable person, a gifted teacher, a great friend and inspiration to so many people. At the time of Bob's passing in 2011, many past students posted tributes to Bob. One such comment read as follows:
"Bob was a true gentleman and a great communicator of history. Not only did he have his unique style of teaching, he made history a very engaging subject for me. I have no doubt he has left a lasting impression on the history books of Colaiste Chiarain and the many thousands of students that passed through his classroom. In fact, I would say he is "one of the greats" of our time. He always had time to talk to you and was genuinely interested in what you had to say and offered many words of advice and encouragement.
Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.
Congratulations to Saoirse Hyland in TY and Tara Neville Moynihan in 1st Year. Both students received a Special Merit Award for their artworks submitted for The Texaco Art Competition. They will be invited to attend an awards ceremony at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Kilmainham next month.

Preparations are well underway for Smile Week in Colaiste Chiarain with our some 1st year student leading the way below.
Next week is Smile Week (4th-7th) of April. The aim of the week is to promote a healthy lifestyle in our school community. We have different events organised for students, staff and parents/guardians in the areas of positive mental, physical and emotional health. We would appreciate everyone’s involvement in creating a positive atmosphere in the school. We hope this positivity will continue and spread through the whole community. A smile has the power to make someone else's day better.
All Junior Students to wear school tracksuit for the week. Senior students can bring in appropriate gear for different activities.
Guardians are welcome to come along to all highlighted events
We also hope that guardians will take part in walking in the evenings that week with their child and post a picture of their efforts to the school twitter page to promote healthy living. Use the twitter handle #colaistechiarain
*Wellness talk focuses on examining how we can be more aware in our everyday life and how to focus on the positive.
