All Ireland Champions
Congratulations to the first year girls team on being crowned All-Ireland Champions in Division B of Basketball Ireland’s schools league.
The team began their campaign last January when they qualified for the Eastern region(Dublin) final.
In March, they were convincing winners at the final in the Oblate Hall, Inchicore, where they defeated the first year team from Loreto, Stephens Green.
In April, they traveled to Waterford to take part in the All-Ireland Quarter finals tournament where they met the regional winners of the south and south-east, once more emerging as winners which qualified them for yesterday’s All-Ireland semi-final in UL and a possible place in the final.
The team and their loyal band of supporters set out early for Limerick and a 10 am appointment with Dunshaughlin CC in the semi-final. After a tense start, the Coláiste Chiaráin girls settled in well and came out as strong winners with a score of 45-26.
In the final they met the team from Presentation, Killarney, a school with a long tradition of All-Ireland basketball success. Once more the players and supporters endured a very tense opening quarter in a tough and physical game. Our girls began to gain the upper hand and were secure winners(28-17) at the final whistle, much to the joy and relief of their supporters and coaches, Yvonne Bracken and Erin Bracken.
The girls and their coaches were justly rewarded for the many long hours of effort and training they put in to reach their goal.
All of Coláiste Chiaráin girls basketball teams will now be promoted to division A of the school’s league, well done to all concerned.
