ACTION ZAMBIA
Pictured left is the staff room in the local community school. Class sizes
of 90 are common. Many schools operate a shift system where classes are run three times a day. This makes efficient use of the scare resources and also in this way a family can allow all their children to go to school at different times during the day and still have some children available to work at other times. This school provides daily food for the students.Women from the local community cook food over a wooden
fire. This may be the only meal that the pupils get in the day.
Pictured left are some of the children we met
in one of the many compounds that surround Kalomo. There
was great excitement as they loved having their picture taken and
seeing themselves in the camera. By the time we left the compound about
50 children were following us, holding our hands. Many of the dwellings have small stalls outside where they try to sell tomatoes, maize etc.
There is no social welfare in Zambia.

The main emphasis was on drama with a guided tour of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and an evening performance of Wicked in the West End. Students and teachers also enjoyed a tour of the city, Covent Garden, Madame Tussaud’s, shopping on Oxford St., Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park and ice-skating. At the beginning of February, 32 5th year students and four teachers enjoyed a four day cultural trip to Paris that included a guided tour of the city, Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower, the latin quarter, the Louvre, Montmartre, Seine River Cruise, Eurodisney, the Stade de France and the Montparnasse Tower. The fact that this trip coincided with Ireland’s win against France in rugby compounded the overall success of the tour!
